The James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx VAMC affiliated with the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine (NYC), numerous Nursing Academic Affiliations and the Hospital for Special Surgery, is located in the NW Bronx on a self-contained campus easily accessible by car (free parking for eligible employees) and public transportation.

 

The James J. Peters VAMC is recruiting for four (4) Registered Nurses for the Extended Care-Community Living Center Department. The Registered Nurse provides a full range of nursing care to patients/residents with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process with a resident/patient centered care model within the Extended Care/Community Living Center setting.

*Tour of Duty: Tour of Duty: 1 RN Vacancy - DAY- 7:30 am- 4:30 pm- Monday through Friday with availability on weekends, 2 RN Evening 3:30 pm- 11:30 pm Monday through Friday with availability on weekends, 1 RN Vacancy- NIGHT- 11:30 pm- 8:00 am- Monday through Friday with availability on weekends.

 

Preferred Qualifications:At least 1 year of RN experience in long term care, rehab nursing and MDS experience.

 

Basic Requirements: (1) Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (2) Graduation from School of Nursing (a) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State [ ] agency [, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies] at the time the program was completed by the applicant: 1. The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), an accrediting arm of the National League for Nursing located at 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, New York 10006 or 2. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), an accrediting arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). (c) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration and the possession of a Certificate from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. (3) Registration a) Condition of Employment. A registered nurse (RN) will have a current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA. (4) Physical Standards. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. (5) English Language Proficiency. RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). 

 

Duties: 

The Registered Nurse in this position will perform initial assessments and re-assessments of condition and response to treatment as well as any other clinical findings. Document assessment in the MDS (Minimum Data Set). Assess residents/patients learning needs, develops and implements a plan to meet needs, and educates residents/patients and families in self-care and treatment measures. Promotes discharge planning and continuity of care through developing an individualized interdisciplinary plan of care in collaboration with the resident/patient, family and health care team; administers prescribed therapies using appropriate judgment. Accurately documents in the medical record resident/patient findings, assessments, and care provided. Administers medications and treatments in accordance with established procedures/policy.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
